Baby Pumpkin Costume

Start with the costume parents actually came for last Halloween: Baby Pumpkin was the site’s most-viewed costume of the 2026 season. The build is below, not behind a quiz: an orange onesie, green felt leaves, a brown felt stem, and light stuffing, pinned where you can see every pin. It takes 20 minutes of hands-on time. If pumpkin is not your baby, eight more first-Halloween builds follow, each with its own photo, time, supplies, and full guide.

Start here: Baby Pumpkin, the full build

This is the whole build. Keep the stuffing between layers, never against the skin, and check the pins and the baby’s neck as the guide says.

Baby Pumpkin Halloween costume

⏱ 20 minEasy

An orange onesie, green felt leaves, and the easiest first Halloween ever.

What you need

  • Orange onesie or footed pajamas, 1 (own, or buy: thrift store)
  • Green craft felt, 1 sheet 9x12 inches (buy: craft store)
  • Soft stuffing or an old pillow, 1 (own)
  • Brown felt for the stem, 1 small piece (buy: craft store)
  • Safety pins, 4 (buy: dollar store)
  • Scissors, 1 pair

Build it, step by step

  1. Lightly stuff the arms and legs, between layers. Never put stuffing against the skin.
  2. Cut leaf shapes from the green felt.
  3. Pin the leaves around the collar.
  4. Roll the brown felt into a stem.
  5. Pin the stem to the top of the hood or a soft hat.
  6. Safety: Keep all pins on the outside of the onesie where you can see them, and never pin near the baby's skin. Skip small parts a baby could pull off. Check every pin stays closed before and during wear. Feel the baby's neck often. Take the stuffing out if they feel hot.
  7. Optional pro finish: photograph the pumpkin in a laundry basket lined with a blanket.

Questions, answered

Is the stuffing safe for a baby?

Use it the way the guide says: lightly stuff the arms and legs between layers, never against the skin. Keep every safety pin on the outside where you can see it, skip small parts a baby could pull off, and take the stuffing out if the baby feels hot.

Do I need to sew the Baby Pumpkin?

No. The leaves and stem pin on with four safety pins. Pin from the outside, check that every pin stays closed, and keep the pins away from the baby's skin.

Does the Baby Pumpkin need face paint?

No. The lead build uses no face paint. Little Lion paints a nose and whiskers and says to skip paint for under-twos and any child who rubs their face; Little Pig Family uses a little blush or face paint on cheeks.

How long do the other builds take?

The eight alternatives run 20 to 40 minutes of hands-on time. Little Lion, Bumble Bee, Pocket Plush Monster, and Fuzzy Gremlin Plush also name drying time for glue.
