Cardboard Knight Costume

The knight starts with the boxes people already have: two or three large ones become a chest plate, back plate, shoulders, and helmet. Silver paint and black marker lines do the metal work, and the sword is a pool noodle wrapped in gray tape. The full build is below. Nine more cardboard costumes follow if your box pile points somewhere else.

Start here: Cardboard Knight, the full build

An adult handles the heavy cutting. The guide is blunt about the helmet: cut the eye holes wide, because cardboard cannot be added back.

Cardboard Knight Halloween costume

⏱ 60 min + 1 hr dryingMedium

Silver-painted cardboard armor and a pool-noodle sword.

What you need

  • Large cardboard boxes, 2 to 3 (make: collect spares)
  • Silver acrylic paint, 1 bottle (buy: craft store, tempera paint works too)
  • Foam brush or paintbrush, 1 wide (own, or buy: craft store)
  • 1 pool noodle (buy: toy store or dollar store)
  • Gray duct tape, 1 roll (buy: dollar store)
  • Black marker, 1 (buy: dollar store)
  • Scissors, 1 pair

Build it, step by step

  1. Safety: An adult should handle the heavy cutting. Cut generous eye holes in the helmet so vision stays clear.
  2. Draw every piece on the cardboard before cutting: chest plate, back plate, shoulders, helmet.
  3. Cut the helmet eye holes wide. Cardboard cannot be added back.
  4. A knight who cannot see is a hazard.
  5. Cut all the pieces.
  6. Paint every armor piece silver.
  7. Let the paint dry fully.
  8. Add rivet dots and edge lines with the black marker.
  9. Tape the plates together so they hinge at the shoulders.
  10. Wrap the pool noodle in gray duct tape for the sword.
  11. Safety: Swing the noodle sword in open space only. Never swing it at faces.
  12. Put the armor on over dark clothes.
  13. Carry the noodle sword.
  14. Optional pro finish: tape a red crepe-paper plume to the helmet top.

Two to three large cardboard boxes for the knight: chest plate, back plate, shoulders, and helmet. Paint every piece silver and add rivet dots and edge lines with the black marker.

Is the sword safe around other kids?

It is a pool noodle wrapped in gray duct tape. The guide's rule is open space only and never swing it at faces.

An adult should handle the heavy cutting. Cut generous eye holes in the helmet so vision stays clear, and test the helmet before the paint goes on.
