DIY Masked Night Hero Costume: Easy 35-Min Build
A black felt cowl mask and a cape cut from an old pillowcase over a black sweatsuit. Rooftop patrol starts at the front door. Thirty-five minutes, easy: an old pillowcase or t-shirt for the cape, a black shirt and pants or sweatsuit, and black felt for the mask. Cut the eye holes while the mask is on the wearer so the hero can actually see.

DIY this week: 35 min of hands-on work
- Old pillowcase or t-shirt for the cape, 1 (make: cut up)
- Black shirt and pants or sweatsuit (own)
- Black felt for the cowl mask, 1 sheet (buy: craft store)
- Safety pins, 4
- Scissors, 1 pair
Tip: cut a small bat shape from leftover felt and pin it to the chest. One silhouette doubles the recognition.
Steps
- Cut the cape: lay the old pillowcase or t-shirt flat and cut a wide rectangle, keeping it above the knees.
- Safety: an adult handles the scissors for the cape cut, and pin the cape at the shoulders, never tie anything around the neck.
- Pin the cape at the shoulders of the black shirt with the safety pins.
- Cut two eye holes in the black felt and tie it on as a cowl mask.
- Pull on the black shirt and pants, pin the cape, tie the mask.
- Optional pro finish: cut a small bat shape from leftover felt and pin it to the chest. One silhouette doubles the recognition.

Common questions
How do you keep the mask on?
Tie the felt strip snugly and knot it twice at the back. Felt grips hair better than paper, so it stays put through trick-or-treating.
Is the cape safe for a young kid?
Keep it short, above the knees, and pin it at the shoulders, never tie it around the neck. A pinned cape pulls free if it snags.
